Prospecting the Murchison is a handy guide written specifically for travellers and new prospectors, helping them gain the skills and knowledge required for successful gold prospecting. The information is presented in four parts, starting from the basics and gradually progressing to more advanced topics, before introducing a number of alluvial localities, where readers can put their skills to the ultimate test.
In the first chapter, the author outlines essential background information on metal detecting and prospecting, covering key areas in detector selection, coil types, basic and advanced detecting techniques, where to prospect, legal requirements, Miner's Rights, Section 20A Permits, using Tengraph and much more. Everything a visitor should know to get them sufficiently prepared for a prospecting trip into the outback of Western Australia.
The second part of the book gives a short history of the goldfields, describing the unbelievable hardship the old-timers endured in their quest for gold. Before the turn of the nineteenth century, much of the state was still relatively uncharted, and yet against all odds, explorers and prospectors made remarkable discoveries, which eventually transformed a sparsely populated British colony into one of the richest countries in the world today.
The third part of the book is where the author reveals some of the best alluvial localities found on the Murchison and East Murchison goldfields, with easy-to-follow mud-maps showing the way. In total there are twenty-five localities within the Day Dawn, Cue and Meekatharra districts of the Murchison Goldfield, as well as the Wiluna District of the East Murchison Goldfield. Readers should note, however, that many of the old diggings shown on the mud-maps are on mining or prospecting tenements, and it is the reader's responsibility to ensure that they obtain permission to prospect on them.
The final chapter of the book shows readers how to accurately determine the gold content in nuggets and specimens using simple specific gravity measurements – something which has baffled even the most experienced prospectors. In this book, the author expertly guides readers through the steps, with several easy-to-follow examples included.
